Mary Kretchmer Wins NHIAA Meet of Champions Freestyle Race, Mark Young and Josh Valentine Score Podium Spots in the Boy’s Classic and Freestyle Races

February 24, 2016

Fryeburg, ME – Feb. 20, 2016 – Gunstock Nordic Association – With new snow and temperatures warming into the 50s, this year’s NHIAA Meet of Champions posed a challenge for both athletes and coaches alike. For the coaches, waxing was a toss up, with some choosing waxless/zero skis for their athletes and others using klister skis. GNA skiers opted for klister skis, which worked well in warm ups but slowed significantly over the duration of the race. In spite of the difficult conditions, Mary Kretchmer (Kingswood, 17:10.3) and Mark Young (Gilford, 15:04.8) overcame the challenge and placed second in their respective 5 km Classic races. Also making the podium in the 5 km Classic with was Josh Valentine (Gilford, 3d in 15:13.4).

In the afternoon 4.5 km Freestyle race, under soft and deteriorating conditions, Mary continued with her solid skiing at set the standard amongst the strongest girl’s field of the season with a top time of 13:55.6. In boy’s race, Josh made the podium again—this time however it was the second spot with a time of 12:26.5. Other notable GNA finishers include: Mark Young (11th Freestyle), Seth Valpey (Gilford – 16th Classic and 19th Freestyle), Sander Valpey (Gilford – 20th Classic and 8th Freestyle), and Cal Schrupp (Gilford – 15th Classic and 15th Freestyle).
